Yea dawg, good seein' ya. Keep doin' what you do. And, Go Tigers!
No Problem!
Nice article on the most hated players, Brandon. I would only suggest that you categorize the truly disliked in something like the following way:
TRULY WICKED MEN: 1) Hal Chase; 2) Rogers Hornsby; 3) Ty Cobb
TRULY WICKED PLAYERS: 1) Ty Cobb (he must be in both categories); 2) John McGraw; 3) Carl Mays
JERKS: 1) Vince Coleman; 2) John Rocker; 3) Jose Canseco; 4) Billy Martin; 5) Carlos Zambrano; 6) Rob Dibble
INSANE: 1) Milton Bradley; 2) Carl Everett; 3) Albert Belle
SULLEN MOTHERS: 1) Dave Kingman; 2) Dick Allen; 3) Jim Rice
ARROGANT ASSHOLES: 1) Gary Sheffield; 2) Curt Schilling; 3) Reggie Jackson; 4) Jeff Kent; 5) Rickey Henderson
CHEATS: 1) Hal Chase (again); 2) Eddie Cicotte (with aid from Chick Gandil and Lefty Williams at least); 3) Pete Rose (also a high-end jerk); 4) Barry Bonds (also a sullen mother); 5) Rafael Palmeiro; 6) Roger Clemens
AND NOW ON TO THE DEARLY BELOVED (in no particular order):
Christy Mathewson, Frank Chance, Stan Musial, Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, Jackie Robinson, Gil Hodges, Sandy Koufax, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Pee Wee Reese, Connie Mack, Casey Stengel, Satchell Paige, Dizzy Dean, Albert Pujols (this may change, we'll have to see)
Y'know, Brandon, your Overrated Baseball slideshow was really off-balance, and more or less a waste of time. Yes, there are some players whose personalities, eras, and teammates made them appear better than they were, but y'know? That's part of the game.
What your "sabermetrics" can never point out is just how clutch a player truly is. The reason it can't is because baseball is ephemeral by nature, and all the dry-bone stats in the world cannot answer to why people react stronger to one player than to another.
Catfish Hunter was a great player. One of the best pitchers of his era. A perfect game pitcher. Don't run him down with your sabermetrics and try and say he's an overrated player. Did he win his games? Does he have his titles? Didn't he make a difference to his teammates, and thus contribute intangibly to his team?
And I'm not even that strong of a Catfish Hunter fan. I just know you can't run a player down just because your nit-picky stats have blinders.
No problem, Brandon. Glad to assist.
Hey Brandon, I read 40 most overated and it was the 1st article I have read by you. Man I know you're tryin to make a name for yourself, but stick to something more positve than insulting people that were much better at their craft than you ever will be. No disrespect intended man, but have you ever heard of Jim Gray? Whatever happened to Jim? Do ya know?
Case and point; Cal Ripken single handedly brought respect back to MLB in Sept. 1995 after the 94 World Series lockout. He did more for baseball that year than the Indians or upstart Marlins. No way overated.
Nolan Ryan? How can you over rate a 44 year old that throws 100 mph in the 9th inning?
Why do you think Pete Rose had the most overwhelming applause at the all-century All-star game? Because we saw him play. Charlie Hustle elevated the play of every player on the diamond. Nobody said he was the greatest hitter except you. We said he was the ALL-TIME hits king. No way over rated. Cy Young? Lou Brock? Reggie Jackson? Sandy Koufax???
With your logic of insulting people, why didn't you say Babe Ruth? I mean he never played against blacks so he must be over rated right? As an avid baseball fan, I have to say you have trampled all over good names man and I bet some of these guys are gonna hate you. So good luck man. If you're going to insult people, try to stick to one at a time or you're gonna find out to late as to what happened to Jim Gray!
You're welcome, Brandon!
*sigh...I know you're gonna say no apologies needed, but sorry...that really shouldn't be happening.
I'm very interested to see when you hit 100 million views, perhaps tomorrow morning?
Ya got it my friend. And sorry about the seemingly arbitrary and pain in the butt edits and style guide.
