43rd pick (2nd Round). DE Everette Brown.
I think this was a great pick. We needed a DE, and we got a damn good one. A 6-4 245 lb athletic monster who is one the best pass rushers coming out of this years draft. He finished 2nd in the ACC Player of the Year voting last year. He is a little undersized, but once he gets on the NFL workout plan he should bulk up. He is a great replacement for Peppers (if Pep gets his wish of leaving). Moving up in the draft was crucial in landing him, because he probably would have not fallen to the Panthers original pick since he was originally projected to go in the first round. This kid is also a Carolina guy, so he has potential of being a fan favorite at Carolina.
59th pick (2nd Round). DB Sherrod Martin.
Do not know a lot about this kid, but Panthers need more depth at the corner position. Some scouts say he will end up playing safety, but is undersized to be a NFL safety. As a CB, scouts say he lacks coverage skills as some NFL corners do. Can't really predict anything on this kid, cause of my lack of knowledge on him. But the Panthers have Gamble, a solid CB, to mentor this kid. Carolina also got a new Defensive Coordinator Ron Meeks from the Indanapolis Colts, who turned around their defense and brought them to being one of the best defenses in the league.
93rd pick (3rd Round). DL Corvey Irvin.
After Irvin's junior year no scout knew his name and probably did not have this kid going in the Draft. A transfer from a junior college who only saw the field this year, because of an injury to a teammate. He had his chance, and he shined. Impressing scouts in his senior year and in the senior bowl, his draft stock rose. A 6-3 301 lb plug, who can stop a runner up the middle. He will add nice depth to our defensive line, coming to help out Kemo and Damoine Lewis.
111th pick (4th round). RB Mike Goodson.
I loved this pick. People thought "Why did we draft another RB? We already have two studs at back?", but I think this kid was brought in for Special Teams. Panthers lost PR/KR Marcus Jones this offseason, so they needed a replacement. Youtube has a lot of good stuff on this kid, returning kicks and punts at A&M. He has blazing speed and quick moves and will probably compete for the KR/PR job.
128th pick (4th round). FB Tony Fiammetta.
Smart pick in the sense that we are going to need a replacement for FB Brad Hoover very soon, but a bad pick in the sense that we could have gotten this kid probably later on in the draft. Anyways, some scouts had this guy as best FB in the draft. I really do not know a lot about him, but if he can play as half as good as Hoover has over the years...I will take him in a heartbeat.
163rd pick (5th round). G Duke Robinson.
Good run blocker who will open up some running lanes for Smash and Dash. He was a three year starter at the University of Oklahoma and was First team All Big 12 his senior year and Honorable Mention his junior year. He also the grandnephew of Motown's Smokey Robinson.
216th pick (7th round). CB Captain Munnerlyn.
This kid will come in on Nickel, Dime, Quarter, and Dollar packages. He is pretty fast running a 4.51 in 40 at the combine. Scouts say he is too short to play outside corner, but they said the same thing about Steve Smith playing WR. He also has really good return game skills and could compete for the KR/PR job.
9/10. That is what I give the Carolina Panthers on their 2009 Draft.
John Fox and GM Hurney always draft very well. Outside of Eric Shelton (2nd round) they have never drafted a bust. They do a very good job in the selection process, as well in building the player up in practice. I know a lot of fans wanted to see us draft a QB to compete with Jake Delhomme, but Jake isn't going anywhere. We signed him to a 5 year extension this offseason, so we are just going to have to deal with it. Plus, Steve Smith said he will only play for one QB, Jake Delhomme, and I do not want to upset our best player. Anyways...the Panthers drafted very well this draft, and I was very pleased with it. I hope the coaches can improve this players and some can make an impact on this year's season.
