When Andy Pettitte announced that he was coming out of retirement, most people around the Yankees were excited to hear about the news.

One person in particular, Freddy Garcia, was less than enthused, because he knows that his spot in the starting rotation was up in the air.

Garcia would prefer to start rather than come out of the bullpen, and he would also prefer to stay with the Yankees.

But according to David Waldstein of the New York Times, Garcia is open to a trade if it means getting a starting job.

Danny Knobler of CBS Sports reported that the Yankees did in fact offer Garcia to the Miami Marlins, but they turned down the Yankees offer.

When Garcia signed his one-year deal back at the end of November, there was a clause that the Yankees had to get Garcia's permission for any type of trade before June 16th.

Do you think Freddy Garcia gets traded before April 6?

After June 16th, the Yankees can deal Garcia anywhere without his consent.

But if the Yankees are trying now to deal Garcia, I think that means they would like to get it done before the season starts on April 6th.

Pettitte is expected to start the season down in the minors with an extended spring training. The target date for his debut is May 1st.

As of now, the Yankees have six starters competing for five spots. CC Sabathia and Hiroki Kuroda are guaranteed locks.

Ivan Nova is also likely to start given his effective 2011 campaign, while Michael Pineda and Phil Hughes will likely get the other two spots.

That makes Garcia the odd man out. Either he heads to the bullpen or gets traded.

Teams can always use starting pitching, and given how well Garcia pitched last season for the Yankees, someone will have to be interested.

Even though the Marlins passed on Garcia, someone else might not.

Don't be surprised if Garcia is starting elsewhere by the time April 6th rolls around.

Stay tuned, Yankees Universe.
